The 70th Annual Comet Relays proved to be a memorable and historic event as Amherst Track and Field proudly hosted the first Comet Relays in the brand-new stadium. With outstanding competition, tremendous support, and a celebration of tradition, the meet once again showcased why it remains one of Ohio’s premier relay events.
On the track, competition was fierce throughout the day. The Mentor boys and Avon girls emerged as team champions, highlighting an impressive field of talent from across the region. Athletes competed with purpose and intensity, delivering strong performances and exciting finishes that embodied the spirit of the Comet Relays.
This year’s meet held special significance as it was dedicated to two individuals who have had a profound and lasting impact on Amherst Track and Field: Coach Terry Kemp and Coach Scott Pecze.
Coach Kemp’s legacy spans nearly four decades and includes a state championship in girls cross country, numerous conference titles, and the development of countless athletes. More than the accolades, he built a culture of consistency, discipline, and belief that continues to shape the program today.
Coach Pecze, a dedicated educator and long-time throws coach, has spent over 25 years developing student-athletes and strengthening the foundation of Amherst’s throwing program. His commitment to growth, learning, and mentorship has helped guide athletes to success at the high school and state levels, while his long-standing service to the Comet Relays has made him a staple of the event.
The success of the Comet Relays would not be possible without the incredible support of so many individuals. A special thank you goes out to our adult volunteers:
Jen Anderson, Stacy Baumgartner, Angela Cecil, Lyndsey Donat, Lindsey Dotson, Janet Guggenbiller, Tim Hoffman, Dana Juristy, Erin Kinser, Jason Kinser, Michelle Kirsch, Amanda Messer, Mason Mishak, Lindsey Mull, Alicia Nicely, Toni Nicoletti, Melissa Petty, Nancy and David Strauser, Theresa Szczepanik, Michelle Taylor, Melissa and Brett Thompson, Ronald Towne, Heidi Vitelli, and Morgan Wachholz.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to the many student volunteers, as well as the officials and coaches, whose professionalism and dedication ensured the meet ran smoothly and efficiently throughout the day.
We are incredibly grateful for the support of the entire Amherst community. Events like the Comet Relays bring our community together—students, families, alumni, coaches, and supporters—all working toward a common goal and celebrating something bigger than themselves. That sense of connection is what makes this event truly special.
As we celebrate the success of this year’s event, we are excited about the future. Hosting the Comet Relays in our new facility marks the beginning of a new chapter, and we look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence while hosting many more outstanding competitions in the years to come.
GO COMETS!!
