The Amherst Steele Comets put together a dominant all-around performance Friday night at Ely Stadium, powering past the Elyria Pioneers, 47-16. The victory improved Amherst’s record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Southwestern Conference.
Quarterback Cy Christensen led the charge, accounting for five total touchdowns while surpassing 7,000 career passing yards in the first quarter. Christensen opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and added a 13-yard rushing score later in the quarter to give Amherst a 14-13 lead. He then connected with Peyton Leibacher for a 17-yard touchdown to close out the first quarter with a 21-13 advantage.
The Comet defense took control in the second quarter, forcing back-to-back turnovers that both resulted in touchdowns. Tyler Denn returned an interception 70 yards for a score, and a few plays later, Maeson Morales intercepted a pass and took it to the end zone to push the lead to 35-13. Amherst went into halftime up 35-16.
In the third quarter, Christensen and Leibacher connected again on a 13-yard touchdown, and moments later, Christensen ran it in from 3 yards out — a drive set up by another Morales interception return to the 3-yard line.
The Comets return home next Friday, October 11, to host Avon at Spitzer Stadium on Comets Care Night.
