Baseball Wins 7-4 at Hilliard Davidson

Baseball jumped out early and held off a late push to earn a 7-4 road win over Hilliard Davidson on Saturday.
The Comets wasted no time in the top of the first inning. Landon Wolf drove in Wilkinson on a groundout to give Amherst a 1-0 lead while also tying the program’s career RBI record with his 82nd. Batting directly behind Wolf, Harrison Schneider singled home Cooper Bingham to extend the lead to 2-0.
Amherst added to its advantage in the second when Zander Hopkins, after reaching on a walk and advancing on a groundout and passed ball, scored on an errant throw at third to make it 3-0.
The Comets extended its lead in the third. Cooper Bingham laid down a bunt single, and Cole Charles came around to score on a throwing error at first. Bingham later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-0.
Hilliard Davidson responded with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Amherst answered in the sixth. Tyler Denn blasted a solo home run, and Gavin Ford added another run by scoring on a wild pitch to make it 7-3.
Hilliard Davidson added a final run late, but Amherst held on for the 7-4 victory.
Jeremy Stepp earned the win on the mound, while Cael Charles recorded his first save of the season to secure the win for the Comets.
