Boys Cross Country Competes at SWC Championships

The Steele boys cross country team turned in a solid performance at the Southwestern Conference Championships on Saturday, October 11, highlighted by senior Asa Nicely’s top-10 finish and Second Team All-SWC honors.
Nicely led the Comets in the varsity race, placing 9th in 17:24. Senior Matthew Walker (21st, 18:09) and sophomore Elias Nicely (22nd, 18:13) packed in close behind, with freshmen Jackson Strawn (24th, 18:20) and Carter Banyas (31st, 18:38) rounding out the scoring five. Sophomores Nolan Cislo (37th, 19:01) and Cale Miller (38th, 19:11) provided key depth. The varsity team placed sixth in a field featuring 53 runners.
In the JV race, Steele celebrated two all-conference recognitions: junior JJ Gedling (15th, 19:36) and senior Paul Cherney (16th, 19:36) each earned Second Team JV All-SWC honors. Juniors Chase Lahetta (30th, 20:46) and Elijah Bonilla (48th, 22:04), sophomore Zyden DeMercurio (46th, 21:54), and freshmen Owen Cooksey (36th, 21:25) and Hayden Cuevas (54th, 22:25) rounded out the JV effort in a field of 88 runners.
Up Next: The Comets return to action next Saturday at Lorain County Community College for the OHSAA District Championships. The boys’ race is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
