The Amherst Steele varsity soccer team traveled to Cleveland Heights on Saturday and emerged with a 3-1 victory.

The Comets started strong offensively with several chances by Matthew Hammond, Ben Thompson, and Kameron Kadow just missing the mark. Gavin Beckler finally broke the scoreless tie, rebounding a deflected shot by Chris Foisy to give Amherst a short-lived lead.

But the Tigers would not go away quietly, putting a dangerous free kick into the box that deflected off a Comet defender and past goalkeeper Casey Giancaterino to even things up before the half.

Amherst came out of halftime energized and inspired as they swarmed the Cleveland Heights goal. Hammond nearly capitalized off a through ball from Thompson, then almost returned the favor with a dangerous cross that was turned away by a defender.

It was Cristiano Reyes who stepped up to be the hero. With time winding down in the match, Reyes gathered a pass from Teagan Debronsky and drilled a laser over the Tiger goalkeeper from 40 yards out, igniting a celebration from the crowd and the Comets bench.

Minutes later, Jaxon Perez would add an insurance goal. Perez intercepted a Cleveland Heights pass and launched a brilliant 40 yard shot of his own which sailed upper-90 to extend the lead to 3-1. Kadow and Foisy had late chances to add to the lead, but could not find the back of the net. Landon Boone also came close, but came up empty on some late chances.

Carter Boone, Evan Ferancy, Gavin Ford, Gavin Beckler, and Ryan Sutton played stellar defense for the Comets, while Giancaterino made several key saves, including a leaping punch over the bar in the final minutes, to preserve the win.

The Comets improved to 5-2-2 on the season and take on Elyria on Wednesday.
