The Amherst Steele varsity soccer team earned a hard-fought win over a very talented and well-coached Lakewood squad on Saturday, 1-0.
The Comets had several early chances to take the lead, but could not find the back of the net. Ben Thompson broke free on a 1 v. 1 in the fifth minute after a brilliant through ball from Jaxon Perez, but the Ranger goalkeeper made a diving save. Seconds later, a Perez corner kick nearly found the head of Gavin Beckler, but the keeper again turned it away to keep the game scoreless. And Perez wasn't done, as he stole the ball from a defender in the eighth minute and fired a dangerous shot to the back post that nearly gave the Comets the lead.
Amherst continued its assault on the Lakewood net as time wore down in the half, but Kameron Kadow's shot sailed just wide and another Thompson breakaway was whistled for offside. In the meantime, two dangerous Lakewood chances were stymied when Comet goalkeeper Casey Giancaterino came off his line to make key saves.
It was Noah Clinton who finally gave the Comets the lead. After Landon Boone beat three defenders with some nifty footwork, Boone fired a shot toward the Lakewood goal that deflected to Clinton's foot and he calmly deposited it in the back of the net for the game's lone goal.
Amherst almost got an insurance goal as a Perez cross found Kadow's head, then deflected to Chris Foisy, but his shot went over the crossbar just before the half.
The Comets fell into a more defensive formation to preserve the lead and the game opened up a bit as the Rangers pushed players forward. A strong Cristiano Reyes shot was saved by the keeper and two breakaway fouls drawn by Thompson and Foisy set up Kadow free kicks that could not find the net.
Late in the game, down a couple players, Ryan Sutton and Lukas Hassing stepped up with a tremendous defensive performance. Beckler, Boone, Sutton, Hassing, Gavin Ford and Evan Ferancy were tremendous on defense all night for the Comets. Giancaterino made seven saves to earn his third shutout of the season.
The Comets are now 4-2-1 and host Olmsted Falls on Wednesday for Teacher Appreciation Night.
