The Amherst Steele varsity soccer team picked up its second win of the season in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to beat Valley Forge, 2-1.
The Comets came out strong, peppering the Valley Forge goalkeeper with several dangerous shots, but he was up to the task. Ben Thompson started things off with a one vs. one off a Cristiano Reyes through ball, but it was saved to keep the game scoreless. Minutes later, Matthew Hammond crushed two lasers toward the corner of the net, but the Patriot goalkeeper made incredible saves on both.
The Comet offense continued their assault on the net in the second half, when Kameron Kadow's free kick nearly gave them the lead, but it was again turned away. Carter Boone then launched a long free kick just over the crossbar and another Kadow shot just missed the far post.
Misfortune would strike late in the half, as the Patriots were awarded a penalty kick on a loose ball foul with 15 minutes left in the game. But Steele goalkeeper Casey Giancaterino was up to the task with a diving save. Unfortunately, Valley Forge would take the lead with a long kick up the field that somehow found the net with ten minutes left in the game.
With time running out, Ty Pinto rose to the occasion, taking a pass from Kadow, beating a defender, and burying a low near-post shot to tie the game. With five minutes to go, Pinto struck again, gathering up a loose ball and scoring the game-winner, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The Comet defense, led by Gavin Beckler, Carter Boone, Evan Ferancy, Gavin Ford, and Lukas Hassing, did the rest and the Comets emerged victorious.
