The Amherst Steele varsity soccer team rolled to a convincing 7-0 victory against Berea-Midpark on Wednesday to open SWC play.
Gavin Beckler opened up the scoring when he deposited a header into the back of the net off a perfect corner kick from Matthew Hammond in the first minute of the game. Seconds later, Ty Pinto made it 2-0, stealing an errant pass and slipping a low shot past the Titan goalkeeper.
Jaxon Perez extended the lead, when Hammond beat his defender down the line and chipped a beautiful cross to Perez at the back post. Just before the half, Ben Thompson put in a fourth goal, following up a Landon Boone shot and burying a point-blank shot to the near post.
Early in the second half, Carter Boone hit a laser from 45 yards out that found the corner of the goal. Kameron Kadow followed with a close range goal off a Landon Boone assist and Noah Clinton finished the scoring, gathering a nifty cross from Teagan Debronsky and beating the goalkeeper with a low, hard shot.
Casey Giancaterino made a few key saves to earn the shutout in the net and the Comet defense, led by Gavin Beckler, Gavin Ford, Evan Ferancy, Carter Boone, Lukas Hassing, Ryan Sutton, and Bryce Reed, was stellar, limiting Berea-Midpark to a handful of chances.
The Comets (3-1, 1-0 in the SWC) travel to Parma Normandy on Saturday for a non-conference clash.
