The Amherst Steele boys varsity soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a convincing 7-1 victory over Vermilion on Saturday in non-conference action.
Ben Thompson scored his first career hat trick to lead the Comets, but it was Matthew Hammond who opened up the scoring. After the Sailors took an early lead off on a penalty kick, Hammond gathered up a loose ball on the right side, cut it back to his left foot, and buried a curling shot to the far post to tie things up.
Minutes later, Hammond threaded the needle with a pass through the defense that found a cutting Ty Pinto. With the goalkeeper off his line, Pinto's chip found the back of the net to give the Comets their first lead of the game.
Amherst extended its lead when Ben Thompson drove past a defender on the goal line and found Pinto again as he finished a point blank shot. Thompson and Pinto reversed roles for the next goal, as Pinto drove down the left side of the field and sent a brilliant cross to a streaking Thompson to increase the lead to 4-1 going into the half.
The Sailors came out strong at the start of the second half after adjusting their formation and put added pressure on the Steele defense. Casey Giancaterino was tested a few times, but was up to the task, making a few key saves to preserve the three goal advantage.
Thompson alleviated the pressure with his second goal of the game, taking a perfectly placed pass from Cristiano Reyes, beating a defender, and finishing a one v. one to the near post. Reyes would then add a goal of his own, firing a hard shot into the side netting off an assist from Kameron Kadow.
Thompson put the finishing touches on the win, scoring a penalty kick after getting dragged down in the box.
The Comets defense, led by Carter Boone, Gavin Beckler, Evan Ferancy, Gavin Ford, Lukas Hassing, Ryan Sutton, and Cole Phelan, was stellar all day against a potent Vermilion attack and Giancaterino made five saves to earn the win in goal.
Amherst Steele finishes the regular season with a record of 11-4-2 and travels to North Canton Hoover on October 22 for a district semi-final matchup.
