The Amherst Steele varsity soccer team dominated most of its match against Parma Normandy, but could not find a game-winner at the end and had to settle for a 1-1 tie.
After Parma Normandy struck first with an early goal, the Invaders packed seven defenders in the box. Despite several dangerous chances, the Comets could not find the net, frustrated by the defensive formation. Matthew Hammond generated most of the Comets' chances in the first half, sending a few crosses through the box in the early going, but each was turned away by a defender.
Ty Pinto nearly put in the equalizer minutes before the half when he beat his defender with a nifty move, then put a shot toward the back post. But the Invader goalkeeper made a diving save to deny him and the Comets went into the half down by a goal.
Amherst continued to press forward into the second half, as shots by Hammond, Ben Thompson, and Kameron Kadow deflected off defenders just wide of the goal.
Teagan Debronsky finally put the Comets on the board with a brilliant finish off a Hammond corner kick with fifteen minutes remaining in the game. Amherst intensified its attack as the time wound down, bringing defender Carter Boone forward on several aggressive runs. With just minutes remaining in the contest, Pinto nearly became the hero, gathering a ball from Cristiano Reyes and heading it toward the corner of the goal, but the keeper once again denied him and the game ended knotted at one apiece.
Gavin Beckler, Evan Ferancy, Gavin Ford, and Boone were amazing on defense, while Casey Giancaterino made five key saves, including a diving stop late in the game, to keep Parma Normandy in check.
Amherst Steele is now 3-1-1 on the season and travels to Avon Lake on Wednesday in a key SWC matchup.
