The Amherst Steele varsity soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five, ousting a talented Open Door squad in a spirited match, 1-0.
The Comets knocked on the door several times in the first half, but couldn't seem to find the back of the net as the Open Door defense made play after play to deny them.
Midway through the half, Matthew Hammond beat his defender down the goalline on several occasions, but his crosses were often gobbled up by the Patriots goalkeeper. Kameron Kadow also made a few dangerous runs into the box, but his high crosses to the back post were again saved to keep the game scoreless.
During their unbeaten streak, it seems a different player has risen to the occasion each week and it was Ben Thompson's turn to find a game-winner. Ty Pinto started the play by showing tremendous soccer IQ, quickly picking up a ball out of bounds and sending a long throw-in down the line. Thompson took two touches toward goal, beat his defender, then buried a shot past the goalkeeper to give the Comets the lead just before the half.
Amherst dominated the second half, but could not find an insurance goal. Cristiano Reyes sent three long shots just over the bar, Jaxon Perez had a few great runs, and Teagan Debronsky almost found paydirt with a strong volley that was saved by the keeper. Thompson also hit two shots on target that were swatted away.
It was Hammond who would take control of the final ten minutes with deadly crosses through the box and two near misses on low, hard shots just off the post. He also took a hard foul to draw a penalty kick, but the Comet kick sailed wide. Thankfully, Hammond dribbled out the final minute of the clock in the corner to preserve the win.
The defense was once again up to the task, as Gavin Beckler, Gavin Ford, Lukas Hassing, Evan Ferancy, and Carter Boone held the Patriots in check. Comet goalkeeper Casey Giancaterino wasn't needed much, but he did come up with two incredible saves off free kicks late in the game and was quick off his line to thwart long balls all day long to earn the shutout.
Amherst Steele improved to 7-2-2 on the season with the win and hosts Avon on Wednesday in a key SWC matchup.
