The Amherst Steele varsity soccer team rolled to a 6-1 victory over a feisty Elyria squad on Wednesday in a tough SWC battle.
Kameron Kadow led off the scoring for the Comets just minutes into the game, finishing a cross from Matthew Hammond with a great header past a diving Pioneer goalkeeper. Shortly after, Ben Thompson collected a punt from Casey Giancaterino, beat two defenders and finished a 1 v. 1 to extend the lead to two.
Both teams exchanged chances as the half wore on. Giancaterino had a few key saves off dangerous free kicks and Carter Boone made a few tough defensive plays to hold the Pioneers at bay.
Hammond again worked his magic just before the half as the Amherst offense exploded. Hammond gathered a loose ball and sent a tremendous cross to the back post. Ty Pinto touched it around a defender, then buried a shot into the back of the net. Seconds later, Thompson served up a pair of nifty assists to Hammond and Jaxon Perez, who both put in goals before the half to give the Comets a comfortable lead at the break.
Hammond would find Perez late in the game to give the Comets a six-goal lead with a brilliant cross that hit Perez in stride on the back post.
The Comet defense, led by Gavin Beckler, Gavin Ford, Carter Boone, Evan Ferancy, Ryan Sutton, Bryce Reed, and Lukas Hassing, held strong all night and Giancaterino was solid in the net, saving six shots to earn the win. Aiden Haney came on late in the game and made an incredible save on a breakaway.
Amherst Steele improves to 6-2-2 on the season and hosts Open Door on Saturday in non-conference action.
