Amherst stormed out to a commanding first-half lead and never looked back in a dominant win over North Olmsted on Friday night.
The Comets wasted no time striking, as Cy Christensen connected with Peyton Leibacher for an 86-yard touchdown just over a minute into the game. After a Josh Tomlin extra point, Amherst was up 7-0.
Later in the opening quarter, Christensen found Cael Charles from seven yards out to double the advantage. On the ensuing kickoff, David Dudziak scooped up a North Olmsted fumble and raced 35 yards for another score, giving the Comets a 21-0 cushion before the first quarter closed.
The momentum carried into the second quarter. Payton Gilles powered into the end zone on a three-yard run, extending the lead to 28-0. North Olmsted threatened to answer late in the half, driving to the Amherst 2-yard line, but the Comets’ defense held firm, stuffing the Eagles on fourth-and-goal. On the very next play, Christensen delivered a historic strike, hitting Dudziak in stride for a 99-yard touchdown — the longest play from scrimmage in school history. The extra point attempt was blocked, but Amherst carried a 34-0 lead into halftime.
With the victory, Amherst improves to 2-0 on the season. The Comets now turn their attention to the grand opening of Spitzer Stadium next Friday when they host Berea-Midpark in their Southwestern Conference opener.
