Hockey Beats Avon Lake 5-3 in Tim Alexander Tournament

Amherst improved its standing in the Tim Alexander Tournament to 2-0 with a 5–3 victory over Avon Lake on Saturday at Rocky River Rec.
Avon Lake struck first when Owen Logterman scored unassisted at 10:26 of the opening period, but the Comets answered when Deakin Kelley tied the game at 6:22. Early in the second, Ryan Gibel pushed Avon Lake back in front at 7:44, then Fisher Sims evened the contest, with an assist from Deakin Kelley, at 4:35 to make it 2–2. Kooper Nilson regained the lead for Avon Lake at 3:27 of the second, sending the teams to the third with Avon Lake up 3–2.
Amherst dominated the final period. Vinny Kelley converted a power-play opportunity at 12:08, assisted by Noah Cheatham and Deakin Kelley, to knot the score at 3. Deakin Kelley followed with an unassisted goal at 6:22, and Maddox Groom added an insurance tally at 5:49 on helpers from Vinny Kelley and Sebastian Smith to seal the 5–3 win.
Goaltender Parker Pelc made 27 saves in the victory. Amherst returns to action Sunday at 10:15 a.m. at Rocky River Rec against Holy Name in Game 3 of the tournament.
