The Amherst hockey team opened its season with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Clay High School in the first round of the Tim Alexander Tournament hosted by Rocky River at the Rocky River Rec Center. After Clay struck first midway through the opening period, the Comets answered when Fisher Sims converted off a setup from Anthony Palumbo to even the score.
Amherst took control in the second period, capitalizing on special teams as Noah Riley buried a power-play goal with help from Noah Cheatham and Palumbo. Moments later, Sebastian Smith extended the lead to 3-1, finishing a feed from Vinny Kelly.
Clay pulled within one on a third-period power-play goal, but Amherst goaltender Anthony Schubert turned aside chance after chance, closing the night with an impressive 49 saves to secure the season-opening win.
The Comets return to the ice tonight for Game 2 of the Tim Alexander Tournament, where they will face Avon Lake at 7:45 p.m.
