Softball dropped a hard-fought 8-7 decision at home to Elyria Catholic on Saturday, despite a late-game surge.
Elyria Catholic jumped out early, scoring four runs in the 1st inning and adding another in the 4th to build a 5-0 lead. The Comets got on the board in the bottom of the 4th when Kayla Rhodes drove in Karina Shuster to cut the deficit to 5-1.
After Elyria Catholic extended its lead with two runs in the 5th, the Comet offense came alive in the 6th inning. Karina Shuster sparked the rally with a double that scored Leah Sprague. Shuster scored when Brianna Blankenship grounded into a fielders choice, making it 7-3. Lexi Fenton followed with a two-run double, bringing home Blankenship and Morgan Lymer to trim the lead to 7-5. Makenna Dorobek continued the momentum with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Samantha Pearch and pulling Amherst within one at 7-6.
Elyria Catholic added an insurance run in the top of the 7th, but the Comets refused to go away. Leah Sprague led off the bottom half with a solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 8-7. However, Amherst was unable to complete the comeback, falling just short in a back-and-forth finish.
