Softball punched its ticket to the OHSAA Division II Regional Final with a 6-1 victory over Twinsburg High School on Wednesday afternoon at Roehm Athletic Complex.
The Comets wasted no time offensively, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Briana Blankenship scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch before Karina Shuster delivered an RBI single to plate Sienna Rebman for a 2-0 lead. Leah Sprague later scored on a passed ball, and Morgan Lymer capped the inning with an RBI single to score Shuster, giving Amherst a 4-0 advantage after one inning.
Amherst added to its lead in the fifth inning when Sprague doubled home Rebman to make it 5-0. The Comets added one more insurance run in the sixth as Blankenship again scored on a wild pitch.
Twinsburg avoided the shutout with a run in the top of the seventh inning, but Amherst closed out the 6-1 regional semifinal victory.
Karina Shuster earned the win in the circle, striking out 14 batters in a complete-game performance.
With the win, the Comets advance to the OHSAA Division II Regional Championship game on Friday, May 29 at 5 p.m. at Roehm Athletic Complex against the winner of Walsh Jesuit and Perry.
