Wrestling beats Avon 41-32

Wrestling built an early cushion and held on down the stretch to earn a 41-32 victory over Avon on Thursday night at Amherst Steele High School.

The Comets opened the match with four straight forfeits at 106, 113, 120 and 126 pounds, as Brock Bottomlee, Jax Percival, Devin Juristy and Chase Chandler each picked up six team points to give Amherst immediate momentum. Amherst continued to build on that advantage at 132 pounds, where Cristian Nieves earned a major decision over Cole Schumacher, and at 138 pounds when Canin Fritz secured a fall over Evan Janson in 1:59.

Avon responded in the middle weights, getting pins from Anthony Mrosko at 144 pounds and Evan Branham at 190 pounds, along with a major decision from Kane Sparks at 150 pounds and a decision by Matthew Dooris at 157 pounds. Those results helped keep the Eagles within striking distance as the dual progressed.

Amherst answered with key wins in the upper middle weights, highlighted by Ali Younes’ decision at 165 pounds and Isaac Vasquez’s dominant major decision at 175 pounds. Despite late pins by Avon at 215 and 285 pounds, the early bonus points and timely victories throughout the lineup proved to be the difference as Amherst secured the nine-point conference win.
